| Pileus | The cap is 5–15 cm in diameter, the surface is smooth, leather-like and creamy yellow when young. In age the cap is pale brown with flakes. The form is irregular, the margin incurved when young, flattening with age. The flesh is thick, white to yellow-white, turning lemon coloured when cooked. | |
| Hymenophore | The pore layer is quite low with small tubes, surface seeming almost smooth. The colour is white, turning yellowish when bruised. | |
| Stipe | The white stem is robust, smooth and knobbly. Sometimes it grows in clusters with stem bases fused, though mostly solitary. | |
| Odour and taste | The smell is attractive, mild, disappearing with age. Mild flavour. | |
| Habitat | It is found in mossy conifereous woods, especially together with fir trees. | |
| NB. | It can easily be mixed up with the not-so-good Albatrellus confluens, which turns apricot coloured when fried or cooked. | |
