  *** Edible and delicious

Cap covered with brown scales. Ready for the pan without cooking.

Pileus The convex cap is 620 cm broad, covered with large brown scales. The flesh is thick, white, stains quickly red when bruised.

Lamellae The gills are very close, at first red-gray, then red-brown and finally blackish brown.

Stipe The stem is tall, thick and hollow and it has a ring underneath of which there are brown scales.

Odour and taste No specific smell, the taste is mild.

Habitat The Scaly Wood Mushroom is found in deciduous woodland and in groves, often in groups. Do not pick them near traffic as they gather up poisonous heavy metals.

NB. Unfortunately this very delicious mushroom is not very common in Finland nor in Sweden.
