    White mushroom. Ready for the pan without cooking.
     
  Pileus The cap is 510 cm broad, the surface dry, smooth or covered with small scales, globular at first, then convex and flattening out with maternity. The flesh is thick, white, stains slightly reddish when bruised.
     
  Lamellae The gills are close, free, white, then pink and finally dark chocolate brown.
     
  Stipe The white, silky stem is 37cm tall, often curved and tapering towards the base. It has a thin, white ring with scales on the margin.  
     
  Odour and taste Mild smell and taste.
     
  Habitat The Field Mushroom is found in rich soil, on fields, meadows and lawns, scattered or forming arcs and rings. Do not pick them near traffic as they gather up poisonous heavy metals.
     
  NB. Be sure to distinguish the Field Mushroom from Amanita virosa Destroying Angel which is also a white mushroom but morbidly toxic, one of the most toxic of all known toadstools.
